S(h)ock!!

Watch me hop, skip and jump a happy dance!!!!
TRIUMPH!!! TRIUMPH!!!
This has been a long time on and off the needles, more off then on, and I can't remember how many times I cast on and then ripped it out all again, sometimes after a few rounds, once I remember after having turned the heel, making me extremely grateful for the fact that I chose this gorgeous Trekking XXL #175 colourway and not some boring ball of yawn... yarn.

So here it is, I have finally finished it... Woohoo!!!!!
My first sock...

It's a tight fit, but it's a fit. I'm not bothered with Second Sock Syndrome, as I will happily chew off one foot to give this single thing of beauty the attention it deserves. As it is, not to worry, I have already cast on for #2. Unfortunately I have hit a snag. See the sweet and innocent looking feline? She likes to chew on stuff... Buttons on shirts, gold rings, they bear her teeth marks... And now she has bitten off the tips of my wooden knitting needles. Needless to say I'm switching to metal!

But before I stock up on new materials here's a question for you...

For my next party trick I would like to learn to knit two socks at once. I have discovered there is more than one way to go about this. Ladies, please, would you share your experience and advice with me? What is the best/easiest/funnest way?? Ease and fun being the operative words, this is a hobby you know ...

A) knitting them on dpn's; didn't think this was even possible, but it can be done
B) knitting them on 1 circular needle
C) knitting them on 2 circular needles
D) ...?...

Thank you, your words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated!!

I've never knitted socks so I can't give any advice. But I do want to congratulate you on your beautiful first sock!

Awesome Job Harmien~~I KNEW you could do it! The color is gorgeous :) Sorry about the needles...I would've thought she'd have preferred the yarn, lol!

I'm no help with the 2 needles at once thing...I have no desire to knit socks on circulars. But, someday I'm going to do the ones on dpn's, one inside the other :)

Beautiful! Unfortunately, I have no wisdom to offer, only Sock Envy! :)

Beautiful, lovely, divine. What amazing colors. Looks so soft and warm............oh yeh, I like the sock too!! Great work Harmien. I have a book from my mother about kniting two-at-a-time on circulars. I'll never learn, so I will gladly send you the book. It just sits, wasting away on my bookshelf.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Your sock is a beautiful color!

I would be scared to try knitting two at once on DPNs...it seems picky to me, and if you make a mistake with just ONE stitch...disaster!

I have knit two at once on one long circ...I picked this way because I am cheap, and only wanted to buy one circ rather than two. ;) I think it is easy and fast...no need even to mark which sock is which or where the beginning of the round is if you leave a little yarn tail. The only thing you have to be careful of is to switch balls of yarn when you switch socks...but you'd have the same thing to remember with two circs. The only tricky bit is casting on.

I have been knitting socks for years and DO have the 2nd sock syndrome so I have tried all of the 'tricks of the trade' to knit two socks at a time. I landed on the perfect, super perfect way for me. Since I want to enjoy the process and love working with DPN's and don't want to feel like I am on an assembly line here is what I do: I start one sock and when I get through the ribbing and first inch then I start the other sock and work it through the ribbing and 2 inches and then I go to the other sock and work 2 inches, etc. It keeps me in the process without complicating it and also I can keep the socks the same size pretty easily. If its a single skein of sock yarn I start at both ends. Have fun!

Well, as I have confessed to Annemarie through many a comment, I am most definitely not a knitter, so I'm going for Option D, which for me would be: Hire someone to knit two socks at a time for you. :-)

I'm afraid that's the best suggestion I can offer. But I do like your newly finished single sock. And I wish you luck in convincing your kitten not to chew on your knitting needles! (For what it's worth, she does look a bit sorry in the photo.)

I cannot tell you anything about how to knit socks, but I could give you my foot size if you want more practice. ;) LOVE that sock!!

Congratulations on this sock! I can't knit socks, I like buying socks. :)
But I can knit jumpers and I have always knitted both arms of the sweater at the same time, so I could have them exactly the same.
I would use two circular needles, but I do have a crush for circular needles so...
Euston once chewed my number 7 knit picks (the circular wooden ones) and I had to reinvest in a new pair. And I now keep it all safely tucked awayd in a closed bag, because the three cats and dogs make a band of little devils around wool and needles...
Hugs to you and the kitties. :)))

I think I have the perfect solution for your sock problems...have Annemarie knit the second one beside you as you knit the first...lol. Looks like you have been bitten by the knitting bug along with her. Love the sock but then I love hand knitted socks. I do not knit but I know the ones I have do stretch as you wear them so it will not stay tight I would think. I did have to laugh at your kitty chewing your knitting needles. :-)

Hugs en groetjes ~
Heidi

You ROCK Harmien!!!! That's awesome :o) My needles and yarn are still in the bag...

Since I'm a newbie to this, I can't help you at all! Hopefully someone can.

Congrats Harmien in your gorgeous green sock! Sorry I'm so late getting in here)

Sorry to hear about your pointless needles :-( I can't even begin to tell you the things my Chloe has eaten (ahem...furniture). But since a friend showed me, I always knit socks on an Addi circular needle. Love my Addi's and as an extra bonus, they are chew-free! I'm sure you can find some video instructions on Youtube.
